Why Your Deck Should Be Your Favorite “Room” of the House
January 1st 2026
Most people think of a deck as something added to the outside of a house. But a well-designed deck becomes part of how you live every day. Sometimes it even turns into your favorite room.
We’ve watched that happen for homeowners across eastern Connecticut, and we’ve lived it ourselves.
It Starts With a Plan, Then Becomes So Much More
When we built a deck at our own second home, the plan was simple: a 16×24 composite deck. But we designed it around the people who would use it.
- A picture frame border and two-tone colors for a finished look
- Wider stairs with deeper treads, lower steps and handrails on both sides, so our parents can walk down comfortably and someone can walk right beside them
- A safety gate to keep the grandkids and our two Labrador Retrievers where they belong
- Privacy lattice that blocks what we don’t want to see while keeping the mountain view
The “Wow” Happens in Layers
It didn’t come together all at once. First the decking went down, then the stairs, then the railings, and each step changed how the space felt. By the time the lighting went in, it felt like a whole new room.
Lighting Changes Everything
Soft, warm lights on the rail posts and steps make the deck glow in the evening. On a snowy winter night, it’s a view we never get tired of. Lighting on the stairs also makes them safer after dark, which matters when you have kids and grandparents going up and down.
It’s Not Just a Deck Anymore
Now it’s where we:
- Step outside for morning coffee
- Watch the birds
- Have dinner as the sun goes down
- Sit and read
- Gather as a family
And the grandkids and dogs finally have room to roam.
What a Great Deck Should Do
Whether it’s a small platform off the kitchen or a big space for entertaining, a great deck should:
- Fit the way you live
- Make your home feel bigger
- Bring people together
- Be a place you actually want to be
That’s what we keep in mind on every deck we design. If you’re still deciding on materials, our post on composite vs pressure-treated decking in Connecticut breaks down the real cost difference.
